The overall framework is a three-ring fusion system.

Start with naphthalene (two benzene rings fused together). The conventional numbering begins at a carbon adjacent to one of the ring junctions: C1-C2-C3-C4 (first ring), then C4a (the ring junction), followed by C5-C6-C7-C8 (second ring), and finally returning to C1 through the other junction, C8a.

Fuse an additional six-membered carbocycle across the peri positions C1 and C8 and the junction C8a. In this added ring, follow the custom path C1 - C8a - C8 - C9 - C10 - C11 - back to C1, with an internal double bond C10=C11.

Substituents on the fused system:
- At C7: a single bond to nitrogen; that nitrogen is further bonded to a methyl group (i.e., -NH-CH3).
- At C9: a double bond to nitrogen, and that nitrogen is singly bonded to a methyl group (-N=CH3). The double bond is E-configured.
