Research Summary (PDF version): Findings from two randomized controlled trials involving adolescents indicate that adolescents who engage in suicidal behaviors during adolescence may experience fewer suicidal outcomes compared with adolescents who engage in risky behaviors early in adolescence. Based on findings from both trials, adolescents who engage in suicidal behaviors early in adolescence should receive psychological counseling or psychiatric evaluation if they wish to decrease their risk for suicidal behaviors during adolescence.
