The issue focused on findings from computer algorithms that automatically segment vehicles into blocks or slots with sensors that determine where vehicles should go and where vehicles should stop. But engineers say they've yet to fully evaluate how algorithms might apply to vehicles without sensors.

Transportation Systems Corp., which operates vehicles at Bell Mobility Corp., says sensors could improve vehicles' navigation and alert systems for situations such as accidents and crashes. It says sensors could provide insight into vehicles' speeds and sensors could detect vehicles ahead of time in locations such as
