The issue focused largely on electronic cigarettes (commonly referred to as vaping), because tobacco smokers smoke combustible cigarette smoke while inhaling vapors produced by vaporizers that emit nicotine from batteries attached to devices such as inhalers or gadgets like vape pens and smartphones. Nicotine levels were measured using automated sensors inserted into computers connected to laptops and iPhones. But researchers pointed out that computer monitors placed inside electronics machines aren't monitored closely enough for accuracy. That meant computers weren't capturing accurate readings of electronic cigarette particles in samples collected outside
