The issue focused on a department that has oversight of local police departments in some states and the Department of Justice that advises the federal government on civil rights issues. The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan had filed a complaint over the policy.


After the Michigan department posted the policy, the ACLU sent a letter to the state police asking the department to reconsider. An attorney with the ACLU told the Ann Arbor News the department was looking at using the policy differently and that it was still testing the waters.
