The issue focused on the "new-media phenomenon" of social media posts. The court's decision said: "While the content of these posts can influence public opinion on important political and social-media posts that are posted by a particular public figure … [they can have no] influence with respect to public interest or public interest groups."

That could mean that the Supreme Court ruling could be used to block the Facebook posts of politicians, including politicians running for office.
