Alice was just thinking about how long she’d had to go to the toilet.  They’d just got to the toilet when Alice heard a little girl’s voice in the street.  The voice called out to Alice, “Alice, do you like sweets?”

Alice looked at Jim and then said, “No!”

The voice called out again, “Alice, do you want to be my friend?”

Alice said nothing.

The voice asked, “If I give you something, will you be my friend?”

Alice shook her head.  Alice thought that it was probably a very small girl’s voice that she’d heard.

A big car passed by and honked its horn.  Alice turned her head to look at the car as it passed.  She didn’t hear the rest of the conversation that the girl had with Alice.

When Alice returned to the front of the house, Jim said, “Sorry, Alice.  I should have asked you if you wanted to be my friend, but I didn’t.”

Alice walked into the house.  She looked at Jim and said, “It doesn’t matter.”

As Alice climbed the stairs to her room, Jim followed her.  He went up to the bathroom and went in.  He saw the empty box of chocolate that Alice had
