Hold the object in front of you for 3-5 minutes or whatever time it takes to feel more peaceful. Do not pick up the object until you are ready to do so. Once you feel calm, open your eyes and focus on the object. If you do not feel calm, try another object. Once you feel calm, open your eyes and gently pick up the object. When I feel ready to pick up the object, I try to do it without looking, because I get scared of it breaking and I feel like I have a tendency to make it a bigger issue than it is). If you feel calm after picking up the object but aren't feeling any other feelings, just leave it there. If you feel more calm, put it back, turn around and pick it back up and repeat the process.
