This is a wonderful example of just how much we really need a good public school education and how much of a priority our children's educational experience needs to be. A great opportunity to learn how to interact and work together at all levels of society is lost due to the public school system, where each child is expected to know the same material and have the same time commitment. I've had this experience of not learning how to read music and not knowing how to play the piano or organ. My son learned to make his own instruments, as well as the piano, which he took private lessons for a couple years, but as soon as he started using public school for instruction on the instrument, he had no musical foundation.

I do think some public school students who want to teach music and play the instrument should have private lessons because their parents should be able to guide and motivate them on their path, rather than making every student spend the entire day in the public school classroom. My husband and I have a difficult time getting a professional musician or composer to play our music because they believe we have too many children. It's difficult for parents to be involved in educating their child's teachers because the teachers believe parents don't understand the subject matter.
