Why not just take the time to make a new game? That would actually be a really good thing to have as an open source project.

The problem is not really with open source games, but with people looking for something to bitch about. Open source games tend to have a low barrier of entry in terms of skill level and game play so lots of people who don't understand games are drawn to them. They start playing it and are confused because the game was not designed for them to begin with. If the game was something with lots of buttons to push and knobs to twiddle in a complex interface (and a longer skill curve) they would get frustrated and leave before they found out that the game was not for them. People will play these games because the cost is zero (no real money) and they are bored and nothing else is out there (at least to them). It is a game, not art or literature, you play it. Most people just want some mindless fun.
