Abstract: Highlights•CISpaces, Collaborative Intelligence Spaces, an AI-based tool codeveloped with experts to support intelligence analysis.•CISpaces integrates argumentation, provenance and crowdsourcing AI techniques for effective interpretation of evidence.•An evaluation with expert intelligence analysts suggests CISpaces principled AI solutions improve analysts’ daily activities.•CISpaces is useful to create more robust and credible hypotheses to improve  understanding of complex situations.•The expert evaluation of CISpaces highlights opportunities, intention to use the system and potential barriers to adoption.
