Hybrid image processing techniques for the reconstruction of lost worlds and the revival of ancient life

Abstract: This paper presents a novel mobile computing guide for augmented reality visits in archaeological sites. We use a hybrid image tracking technique for the reconstruction of ruined ancient worlds in the context of their natural surroundings. Ancient life is revived and used to create high realism. The user's profile and his position and orientation data are used to create personalized, augmented tours. The system, named ARCHEOGUIDE for Augmented Reality-based Cultural Heritage On-site GUIDE, has been tested with ordinary visitors, archaeologists and technology experts at the archaeological site of Olympia in Greece.
