Abstract: Highlights•Analytical model to estimate the PIT occupancy distribution via a CTMC model is proposed.•Simulation with realistic traffic streams is carried out to validate the proposed model.•The filtering effects of caching and interest aggregation support the assumptions.•State-space truncation and state aggregation is used to solve the model numerically.•Numerical results are given to demonstrate the accuracy of our approximations.
