Abstract: Highlights•A new feature clustering-based feature selection method to search for multiple optimal feature subsets in classification tasks;•A new niching-based mutation operator by adaptively determining niches to explore the vicinity of individuals;•A new modification operator to modify the duplicated feature subsets so as to increase the population diversity ;•Extensive experimental analysis to show the superior performance of the new approach and provide novel insights into the data.
