Abstract: Highlights•This paper surveys most major mathematical approaches to uncertainty theory.•This is the first such survey in years; awareness is low in the fusion community.•The paper proposes a possible clustering of methods with similar semantics.•Ways of injecting ‘epistemic’ uncertainty modelling into AI are also discussed.
