Abstract: Highlights•Piecewise deterministic Markov process is applied to the imperfect maintenance model for the first time.•The degradation of the system includes deterministic natural degradation and random shocks.•The improvement factor of imperfect maintenance depends on the number of imperfect maintenances.•The maintenance of units is delayed, and the units will still suffer natural degradation and random shocks while waiting for maintenance.
