Abstract: Infrared imagery has been used in many applications. Since the dynamic range of the infrared camera is wider than that of the RGB camera, the infrared image is usually stored in high bit-depth format. This paper proposes a technique to encode the high bit-depth infrared video, where the perception for the high dynamic range content is taken into account. After realizing the modified rate-distortion optimization, the experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve up to 13% bitrate reduction while keeping comparable quality in terms of HDR-VDP-2, compared to the H.264/AVC FRExt scheme.
