Approximation algorithms for a virtual machine allocation problem with finite types

Abstract: Highlights•The virtual machine allocation is considered with CPU and memory resources.•The configured size of the virtual and physical machines are all powers of 2.•A 20/9 approximation algorithm based on the best fit heuristic is provided.•Heuristics of combining items and pre-partition bin space construct a VMPack algorithm.•VMPack is 10/9 asymptotic approximate better than the 1.405+ϵ<math><mn is="true">1.405</mn><mo linebreak="goodbreak" linebreakstyle="after" is="true">+</mo><mi is="true">ϵ</mi></math> of the general algorithm.
