Abstract: Highlights•A new network representation for the transit network design problem is presented.•The Direct Link Network (DLN) adds additional edges instead of additional nodes.•DLN works much faster than most commonly used node-expansion methods.•DLN promises significant speed up in all algorithms addressing passenger assignment.
