Abstract: Highlights•The brain's subjective surprise is decoded instead of stimulus types.•The P300 and MMN components are equally informative about the surprise of stimuli.•Perception of surprise is independent of the sensory modality.•All rare stimuli are not necessarily surprising stimuli.•Decoder's performance is equally good with or without motor response.
