Abstract: Highlights•Noninvasive studies of functional connectivity are complicated by spatial leakage(SL).•PSIICOS framework allows for approaching this task as a source estimation problem.•Instead of ECDs, the sources are represented by dyadic networks.•Analytically, PSIICOS optimally suppresses SL and retains zero-phase coupling.•We inscribe the FC estimation task into the conventional source estimation framework.•Based on this framework, we formulate novel estimators to explore in the future.
