Abstract: Highlights•Methodology to automatically convert cue-scope annotations of negation and speculation to assertion annotations.•Experiments on assertion classification in Spanish clinical text with a range of state-of-the-art neural architectures.•Evaluation scenarios with decreasing amounts of data and adversarial examples.•Transformer monolingual models set off with greater advantage, but all tested models reach similar performance when allowed to exploit enough data.
