Abstract: Highlights•We identified and classified shark images with 90% and 69% accuracy, respectively.•This approach can efficiently classify 26 genera and 47 shark species.•The Shark Detector can automate processing of visual media surveys of sharks.•The Shark Detector will become more efficient and precise as new images are ingested.•This method will help mine social networks to generate shark biodiversity records.
