A Simulation Platform for Sensing System Selection for Occupant Distribution Estimation in Smart Buildings

Abstract: The advances in sensing technology have greatly promoted its application in estimating occupant distribution-which is critical in terms of building energy efficiency and emergency evacuation guidance-but also present the challenge of choosing the appropriate sensors for a building. In this paper, we consider this important problem and proposed a simulation platform for sensing system selection. A four-level occupant movement model and several semi-mechanism sensor models are developed to drive the simulation. In addition, our simulation can be also driven by ground truth data. A case study of the FIT building, Tsinghua University, Beijing is provided and the advantage of the sensing system chosen by our simulation is demonstrated in the results.
