Abstract: Silicon prototypes (tapeouts) are crucial in realizing new hardware accelerator designs, yet physical design continues to be a formidable bottleneck which prevents more designs from reaching tapeout. We explore some possible factors behind the difficulty and speculate on some paths forward.
