Abstract: Highlights•A connection network model is established for the vehicle scheduling problem.•A genetic algorithm based column generation approach is proposed for the problem.•A heuristic is proposed to generate initial columns to accelerate column generation.•Experiments show that the approach is 40 times faster than the branch and price.
