Abstract: Highlights•We concentrate on the edge computing WSNs in the microgrid (MG) and propose an edge-adaptive and fault-tolerant routing algorithm.•The routing is constructed using advanced particle swarm optimization and the MG consists of the inter-cluster structure and the intra-cluster structure.•We build energy models and lifetime models for the nodes and the network, which are used to quantify the performance and routing construction.•In addition, the sensors can address accidental malfunctions quickly.•The self-healing ability will improve the network stability and reliability.
