Abstract: Highlights•Investigative information retrieval is a sub-task of exploratory search with more emphasis on transparency and reasoning. It can be used to complement black-box methods with regards to verification and transparency.•Relevance structures can be used to help a user better understand how documents are relevant to the queries and to navigate complex data collections.•Formal evaluation of the Relevance Structure-based Entity Ranker demonstrates the viability and value of the proposed methodology of document structure-driven investigative information retrieval.
