Abstract: Highlights•Analyze literatures of stereo matching, optical flow, satellite data and remote sensing in the past decade.•Propose an optical flow-based terrain extraction framework of VHR optical satellite stereo images.•The dense optical flow method is introduced to handle the difficulty of the poor stereo matching effect of VHR satellite images with large parallaxes.•Verify effectiveness and stability of optical flow on four different types of satellite datasets for terrain extraction.
