Abstract: Highlights•A new impedance spectroscopy measurement configuration for substrate root zone.•Impedance features within 100 Hz–2 MHz are strongly correlated with water content.•Root biomass and position can be detected using EIS method.•The position of plant has little effect on the frequency of maximum phase difference.•EIS method provides a way to find the optimal frequency for EIT system of root zone.
