Abstract: Highlights•Use of large-scale mobility data collected from mobile phones in disaster applications have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.•We lack a comprehensive review that synthesizes the work leveraging mobile phone location data and case studies of natural hazards and epidemics.•We summarize the existing work on the usage of mobile phone location data for disaster response and recovery from an interdisciplinary body of literature.•We point to promising areas and future challenges for using data to support disaster response and recovery.
