Abstract: This paper presents the results of a bridge inspection task analysis conducted in collaboration with the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) in order to maximize the impact of the development of a technology aimed to assist bridge inspectors in performing their tasks. More specifically, we analyzed the inspection tasks for inspection of bridges made of concrete. Results include the set of requirements to become a MTQ’s bridge inspector and explain the various steps of a bridge inspection. Then we discuss ways to maximize the impact of technology to assist inspectors in doing their tasks. We conclude that for a use case of a drone inspection with a drone equipped with a common color image sensor for visible light, this technology is well suited to improve annual visual bridge inspections, as well as for the inspection of confined spaces.
