Abstract: Highlights•Left and right facial profiles are visually similar in three sea turtle species.•Deep learning methods detect left–right profile similarities.•Exploitation of this similarity can be translated to higher photo-ID accuracies.•Both profiles should be included in the search dataset when matching a given profile.•A deep embedding model finely trained with a part of the database should be used.•Without a training set, a neural network-based local feature method is preferable.
