Abstract: Highlight•We propose a new framework that can efficiently perform the registration task for multimodal images with large deformation fields:•We introduce a novel log-weighted phase-consistent edge detection algorithm to mitigate problems such as edge response and spectral leakage.•We propose a novel similarity metric called Global Intersection Mutual Information (GIMI) to reliably measure the accuracy of image alignment.•We propose a new framework that combines spatial and frequency domains to accomplish the multimode image registration task from global to local.
