Abstract: The motivation of this work originates from recent studies on sketch-based modelling that emphasize on the reliance of the designers on traditional methods for conveying their ideas. Many studies have chosen to focus on 3D modelling from digital sketching because of the challenges and complexity of reconstructing from paper sketches. Considering the complications of paper sketching, it is still an ideation strategy proven as an effective, flexible and instantaneous tool compared to sketching with computer-based instruments. Later, this ideation is needed to be visualized in three dimensions for better understanding. Therefore, an automated application is required to transform paper sketches into three-dimensional models. For this reason a mechanism for 3D modelling based on paper sketches is introduced which constitutes the essential processes for a computer to understand the paper sketch junctions, depth and connections. It is also important that the real designers could evaluate the application for their practical and daily use. Therefore, a case study is conducted among computer graphics experts and professional designers shows that the proposed system can precisely reconstruct the 3D model resemblance of the original sketch based on human perception validation. The evaluation on experienced designers affirmed that the whole automated process is not only convenient, but also time efficient and can gracefully substitute the current practice.
