High dynamic range image tone mapping based on asymmetric model of retinal adaptation

Abstract: Highlights •A new asymmetric sigmoid curve (ASC) is introduced based on the conventional luminance response model of human eyes.•Two novel global tone mapping operators are proposed using the ASC.•The proposed ASC-based global tone mapping operator employs the classic photography technique.•The proposed contrast-enhancing global tone mapping operator combines the ASC and the HDR image histogram by formulating an optimization problem.•The proposed tone mapping methods show a high performance to the state-of-the-art global tone mapping operators in two objective evaluations.
