Abstract: Highlights•Basic bibliometric indexes are utilized to characterize the global trends of medical image research from 1993 to 2022.•Network-based methods are employed to analyze the co-word, co-authorship, and co-citation relations.•Analysis shows the present medical image research is on an upward trend.•Medical image research starts to speed up after 2015 due to the application of convolutional neural networks.
