The individual characteristics of SSVEP for Modulated Flickers

Abstract: The Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) is useful as a basis for the Brain-computer interface (BCI). The liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor-based visual stimulus expands the versatility of BCI. However, the flickering frequency of the visual stimulus is limited due to the refresh rate of LCD monitor. Modulated flickers have been proposed as a way to overcome the limitation problem. In the conventional research, the frequency structure of the flickering pattern was used to identify the frequency of SSVEP. However, some modulated visual stimuli yield the SSVEP which has multiple peaks in frequency structure. In this paper, we show that the relationship between the frequency structure of flickering patterns and the frequency of SSVEP represents individual characteristics. In addition, the identification is performed using k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) and SSVEP.
