Abstract: Highlights•We present an analysis of player perception and reactions to surprising events.•We conduct a study investigating players’ responses to generated surprising events.•Multimodal data is correlated to explain divergence in player perception of surprise.•We propose a framework for categorizing surprising events into three categories.•We suggest how to extend existing theory of surprise towards automated game design.
