Abstract: Highlights•A generative AI tool was introduced into a mind mapping-based collaborative environment.•Experimental group adopting the GMMCE outperformed the control group adopting the MMCE.•GMMCE groups developed a collaborative knowledge construction process in cognitive dimension.•MMCE groups centered on the regulative dimension throughout the collaborative process.•GMMCE groups have a positive attitude toward using generative artificial intelligence.
