Abstract: Highlights•The optimization chain effectively reduces the drag in different velocity regimes.•RBF well preserves mesh quality, and it is computational cheap.•Different mesh deformation techniques bring to different sensitivity so a different final shape.•Complex and rotating geometries can be handled.•The optimization is cad-free and do not modify the grid connectivity.
