Authors Biographies: Silvia Bruni works at the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence. He deals in particular with collaboration projects with Wikimedia (Wikistazione), activities in prison (Penitentiary University Centre), projects on writing, qualitative research, involvement of students in the activities of cultural institutions. He is part of the Wikidata working group of the University Library System. Alida Daniele works at the Biomedical Library of the University of Florence. It deals in particular with support for Open Access and research evaluation, courses for users and assistance with bibliographic research. He is part of the Wikidata working group of the University Library System. Fabrizio Nunnari works at the Science Library (BS) of the University of Florence. In particular, it deals with the management of periodicals, the promotion of library services and assistance with bibliographic research. He is part of the University Library System (SBA) Working Group on Collection Management and of the Wikidata SBA Working Group. Elisabetta Viti Library officer at BNCF in the Semantic Indexing Tools and Searches sector. Abstract:

This paper discusses the collaboration between the Wikidata Group at the University of Florence, librarians from the Research and Semantic Indexing Tools Department at the National Central Library of Florence (BNCF), and Wikimdata volunteers, aimed at creating a domain ontology for photography in Wikidata. This project involves aligning Wikidata with the Thesaurus Nuovo soggettario through semantic and technical integration. The collaboration leverages the open, structured data of the Thesaurus, adhering to international standards and the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability).

Key challenges include:

Structural and functional differences between the two tools.
The cultural scope, user base, and mission of the participating institutions.
The complex, specific, and sometimes ambiguous nature of the specialized terminology involved.
These challenges revealed semantic misalignments, prompting revisions in both databases to better align their meanings and terms.
