Abstract: Field Programmable Gate Arrays are essential components in applications, which require a certain degree of reconfigurability. This feature is achieved by a sea of configurable logic blocks, which realize the desired boolean functions. These blocks require interconnect lanes to realize more complex functions and to exchange data. In consequence, interconnect logic consumes a comparably large amount of each FPGA type, where multiplexers are an integral part. These components can be realized in different ways with different advantages and drawbacks. In this paper, selected multiplexer designs are compared to a versatile, newly developed, data retaining and power saving multiplexer design.
