Abstract: Highlights•The best ways to use VR Training Systems (VRTS) has yet to be fully investigated.•The paper compares VR with non-VR training in the field of energy management.•It also compares different ways to use VR (traditional vs learning-by-teaching, LBT).•VRTS proved more effective if used alone than combined with traditional training.•LBT proved superior in terms of knowledge gain and retention for procedural aspects.
