Funding Area: Critical shared infrastructure / Infraestructura compartida critica
Problem Statement: Climate change mitigation has been the biggest concern of the 21st century. With many government and non government entities working towards curbing the adverse effects of this phenomenon, informal settlements have for the most part been left out of this discussion despite their much needed involvement in containing climate change. This project seeks to address the problem of marginalization of people living informal settlements and how to best involve them in solving the crisis of climate change
Proposed Activities: These are the highlights of the proposed activities: Map the green spaces available in Kibera’s thirteen villages. This map will showcase the extent of resource distribution with regards to environmental pollution and the population affected. The map will also show the green spaces available as well as green movements available within the community In addition to the mapping exercise, we will also use an open hardware tool to measure the air quality of the villages in Kibera. This will also help us to gather the metrics that justify the project goals with regards to interventions towards climate change After these, there will be a community forum that will allow different stakeholders to discuss the prospects of climate change mitigation from a local perspective. The targeted groups involved will be local residents, community leaders, conservationists and representatives from civil groups Tree planting Video and blogging of the events and publication of the findings from the project. Drawing of maps and murals at public spaces to share the findings with the local community
Openness: The project will be open based on the following prospects The first aspect of openness of the project would be the mapping and data collection part. We will train and deploy the youth from the respective villages to assist us with mapping of the resources. The data would later be uploaded to openstreetmap where it will be freely accessible to all interested parties. The videos taken from the short documentary will also be shared on You Tube, Twitter and Instagram as well as other social media platforms The murals and print maps will be accessible to the public and the locals can interact with it freely without any formality or restrictions
Challenges: Challenges expected would the following: Lack of interest from the community. Many people living in informal settlements have “bigger problems to worry about” and climate change mitigation is the least of them Lack of understanding of the issue of climate change within the local community. The community has a very shallow knowledge on climate change let alone their civic duty towards solving the issue Interference by social strife; ongoing anti government protests across the country would prove challenging and even hinder social gatherings as well data collection Simplification of technical aspects of the project might prove challenging
Neglectedness: I am not aware of any alternative options for funding. I have not applied for any other funding for the same project.
Success: Conducting an Impact assessment: Community feedback i.e. from the blog, metrics from YouTube, number of people viewing the murals and printed maps as well as their reactions Review of project specifications. This will enable the team to remain focused on the set project goals Budget compliance. We will try as much to work within the confines of the budget Deliverables. We will assign roles and create targets that will help the team to deliver on time and meet scheduled requirements. This will include writing project reports to measure the progress Review team satisfaction. All stakeholders involved in the project will assist us by giving recommendations and suggesting interventions of various sorts on a need basis
