Abstract: Highlights•Composite mutation strategy (CMS) and restart strategy (RS) are embedded into SSA.•CMS is able to boost the exploitation and exploration trends of SSA.•RS is capable of assisting salps in getting away from local optimum.•The proposed method is verified on IEEE CEC2017 benchmarks.•The proposed method is also tested on IEEE CEC2011 and engineering problems.
