Sidewalk networks: Review and outlook

Abstract: Highlights•Research on pedestrian infrastructure at a large scale has been systematically neglected for different reasons.•Paths to good quality and standardised data on footways are critically reviewed.•Possible research topics and open problems on city-wide sidewalk networks are suggested, building on previous contributions.•Sidewalk networks are discussed in the wider context of multimodal mobility.
