Abstract: Language models have been developing rapidly so far, and can be applied to different cases and scenes in various domains. However, do language models really understand in a conversation? In view of the basic principle of language modeling and text generation, we have reason to keep an attitude of suspicion. Inspired from this, we propose several tasks and evaluation methods to find out whether language models truly understand or not. We also conduct experiments in some scenes to test the rationality and intelligence of language models. In analyzing the experimental results, we find the marvelous effect of visual inputs, which brings additional information to the language models. This indicates a corresponding relation between visual information and nonverbal communication accordingly.
