Abstract: Highlights•The article provides an overview on state-of-the-art portable 3-D scanners.•For truly portable scanners we advocate the passive tracking of the pose of 3-D modeling devices by their own high-rate images in realtime.•The above methods are implemented on the DLR 3D-Modeler.•Demonstrations and abundant video material validate the approach.
