Abstract: Highlights•Analyzed the properties of unstructured building metadata and formalized the building metadata generation problem and its variants.•Introduced information extraction to systematically address the building metadata model generation problem.•Designed and implemented an automated system, MetaCloze, to address the key challenges in using information extraction.•Evaluation results show that the proposed MetaCloze system has high accuracy and outperforms baseline models.
